Male Torso Lamp Stand L1-24-01
The masculine torso lamp stands are hand-crafted by me from stoneware ceramic. There are natural minor imperfections, unlike with mass-produced items. I sculpt the original and make a plaster mould, casting each piece individually. It can take up to two weeks to make each piece.
I use various glazing techniques to finish the pieces. Depending on the glaze and final firing temperature, the size can vary: the higher the temperature, the more shrinkage will be experienced. One of my personal favourite glazing techniques is that of Raku, an age-old Japanese technique. The pieces are fired to a temperature of between 950°C and 1,100°C. At peak temperature, they are pulled from the kiln and placed in a reduction chamber with sawdust and newspaper. The flames and smoke from this process develop the colours. This process is unpredictable in nature and makes each piece truly unique.
It is not unusual for the pieces to crack, due to the thermal shock to which they are subjected. This adds to their individuality. Minor cracks are repaired with epoxy from the inside, while others are repaired from both sides using the Japanese technique of Kintsugi.
It is advisable when using the pieces to avoid direct sunlight as the colours could change – and even, over the years, lose all colour.
